Showing the work is the feature

Plenty of sites will tell you what 18% of $64 is. The point here is the line underneath — 64 × 0.18 = 11.52 — visible, so you can confirm it in your head or on paper. It also keeps honest distinctions honest: markup and margin, for instance, are different formulas, and the calculator tells you which one it ran.

When exactness is required

These tools do everyday arithmetic for convenience; for tax, payroll, or legal figures that must be exact, confirm with the relevant authority or professional.
